Black Spruce Essential Oil by Young LivingNorthern Lights Black Spruce essential oil comes from Young Living’s Northern Lights Farm in British Columbia, Canada. This oil includes the naturally occurring constituents alpha-pinene, camphene, and beta-pinene.

Black spruce, along with many of the tree oils, is a grounding oil that holds a frequency of balance. Black Spruce is good for centering, calming, and focusing. Apply to bottoms of feet, along the spine, or on the back of the neck to create a sense of grounding.

Black Spruce is grounding and stimulating at the same time. While it has a calming effect on hyper energy, it energizes when feeling fatigue.

Black Spruce is soothing to tired muscles. It is often used in liniments, aerosols or with carrier oils in massage.

For tired muscles and sore joints, combine 5 drops of Black Spruce with 1 tablespoon of carrier oil. Massage the affected area twice a day.

Here are a few recipes using Black Spruce essential oil in massage oil blends

Muscle Relaxing Essential Oil Blend

25 drops Balsam Fir
15 drops Basil
10 drops Marjoram
8 drops Black Spruce
4 drops Wintergreen

Apply on location to muscles, neck, and feet, as an aid to relaxation. Dilute with a vegetable or massage oil for a body massage.

Tired Muscle Massage Oil

10 drops PanAway
8 drops Wintergreen
8 drops Marjoram
6 drops Black Spruce

Dilute in ½ oz. of V-6 Massage Oil or Massage Oil Base and massage the entire body.

Feeling Limber Massage Oil

8 drops Black Spruce
5 drops Douglas fir
5 drops Helichrysum
4 drops Wintergreen
2 drops German Chamomile
4 drops Elemi

Directions:
Dilute 50-50, massage 3-6 drops on location, repeat as often as needed.

Overworked Muscle Massage Oil
20 drops Wintergreen
15 drops Marjoram
10 drops Juniper
10 drops Cypress
6 drops Black Spruce

Peppermint Essential Oil MassagePeppermint oil consists of between 28 and 48 percent menthol, which is very stimulating but also, soothing to tired muscles after a day of strenuous activity or sports. Peppermint oil is and energizing pick me up or a cooling down after a heavy workout. Here are 10 uses for Peppermint oil you will want to try!

1. Cool down after a workout session or heavy activity – Add two drops of Peppermint to a cold, damp washcloth and place on the back of your neck, your forehead, or your chest to help cool down after a workout, especially on a hot day. The menthol and menthyl acetate constituents create a nice cooling sensation.

After Workout Cool Down Spray
4-6 drops peppermint
4 oz spray bottle filled with water

Shake and spray as needed.

2. Soothe tired overworked muscles – Peppermint essential oil is one that is really soothing to tired, overworked muscles. It’s a “hot” oil so you can dilute it with 1 drop of Peppermint with 4 drops of V-6 or another carrier if it burns a bit. You can make your own massage oil blends adding Peppermint as one of the ingredients. Here are a couple examples:

Cooling and Soothing blend
4 drops peppermint
3 drops lavender
4 drops cypress
3 drops wintergreen
4 drops marjoram

Mix neat or double quantities in 1 oz V-6 Mixing Oil or Massage Oil Base.

Athletic Muscle Rub

1 Cup Coconut Oil
10 Drops Peppermint
10 Drops Wintergreen
10 Drops Copaiba

Whip and store in container.

DIY Whipped Body Butter
3/4 cup grated cocoa butter
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup shea butter
1/2 cup almond or jojoba oil
10 drops of Peppermint, or another essential oil

Melt the cocoa butter, coconut oil, and shea butter in a double boiler. When melted completely, stir in almond oil and essential oil until combined. Chill in refrigerator until slightly hardened, about 30 minutes. Whip with mixer until smooth and creamy, about 5-10 minutes, then store in glass jar.

3. Add Peppermint to your water – Add a drop or 2 of Peppermint Vitality to your drinking water for an energizing boost after a workout or a day of hard work. Very refreshing way to cool down after exercising.

4. Support digestion – Add a drop or two of Peppermint Vitality to a glass of water or a cup of tea to support normal digestion and help with gastrointestinal discomfort. Massage a couple drops of Peppermint oil on the abdomen to support normal digestion and reduce feelings of discomfort after large meals.

5. Soothing Gel – Add a few drops each of Peppermint and Lavender to aloe vera gel for a soothing after sun cool down.

9. Massage on location – Massage several drops of Peppermint oil on the area of discomfort to support muscles and joint. Massage Peppermint oil on joints.

Massage on feet – Massage several drops of Peppermint oil on the bottom of your feet to soothe after a long day on standing or walking. Mix Peppermint oil in a footbath to relieve sore feet. Keep water agitated while soaking feet.

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are naturally derived from vegetarian sources and have a neutral smell. They aren’t volatile like essential oils, which makes them an excellent medium for dilution and application.

What aren’t carrier oils?

Vegetable shortening, butter, and margarine are best left in the kitchen—they’re not intended for topical use. Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives like petroleum jelly should also not be used as carrier oils.

How are carrier oils used?

Essential oils are volatile, which means they evaporate rapidly and contain the natural smell and characteristics of the plant. This can make them too strong to apply undiluted. Carrier oils do not evaporate or have a strong aroma, making them the perfect pair for diluting especially strong essential oils—reducing the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. When you dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, you can also control its concentration before applying.

Like other substances that are high in fat, carrier oils have a limited shelf life, meaning that eventually they can go bad. Depending on the type, oils with a short shelf life should typically be used within six months, while oils with a longer shelf life may stay good for up to a year. It’s important to store oils in their original air-tight containers in a cool, dark place, such as the pantry, to maximize shelf life.

Carrier oils can vary widely in their consistency, absorption, aroma, shelf life, and other characteristics. Carrier oils can be blended to change or combine their properties, so you can mix and match until you find the blend that’s just right for you!
